In Search of Human Rights : legal pollitical dilemmas of Indonesia's new order 1966-1990
This study has grown out of my sixteen years' experience as legal aid lawyer at the Lembaga Bantuan Hukum (Legal Aid Institute), in Jakarta, Indonesia. Initially, I sincerely believed that legal aid could provide relief and open the avenue to justice for the poor and the powerless; I believed that the law could cure the injustices within the society; I believed that the judiciary could serve as the house of justice. This belief led me to render my legal services tirelessly to those who were forced to give up their land, those who were forced to become homeless, those who were fired from their jobs, and those who were arbitrarily detained. But I was too naive because, as it turned out, it was too good to be true. Inevitably, the poor became poorer, and the powerless became even more powerless. I realized that the law, or the rule of law, was nothing more than a myth.
