Cornelis Dirk (Kees) Grijns was born in Delft as the second of the three children of Cornelis Dirk Grijns and Betty (.E.G.) van Bijlert. His grandfather Grijns was an associate of Dr Ch. Eijkman, the 1929 winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine as one of the 'discoverers' of vitamins, whom he succeeded as director of the bacteriological laboratory in Batavia on Eijkman's return to the Netherlands, and later became professor of animal physiology at Wage-ningen Agricultural University.
