Paper Landscapes : explorations in the environmental history of Indonesia
Issues like logging, forest fires, wildlife protection, population growth, pollution and sustainable development have drawn widespread attention in recent years to the pro- blematic relationship between people and environment in Southeast Asia. But too much of what has so far passed for the 'historical background' to Indonesia's envi- ronmental problems has consisted of little more than thinly disguised backward pro- jections of modern trends. Only recently have some scholars begun the laborious task of sifting the haystack of the historical record for those needles of information which provide clues to the landscapes and ecologies of the Indonesian past.
