The student of a social structure seeks to explain the action con sequences of a particular set of institutional arrangements. In order to do this, he must correctly estimate the meaning of those arrangements or their effect on the human personality. All institutional arrangements are ultimately mediated through individual human action. The con- sequences of any institutional arrangement, therefore, depend, at least in part, upon its effect on the human personality, broadly conceived.
