We know that Napoleon tried to apply the ideas of the Contrat Social to the officers of his regiment; the idea of everyone's commitment to the whole was the essence of his conception of morale. Indeed, there is alive in Rousseau, especially in the Contrat Social, something of the spirit of ancient Rome, with its emphasis on the soldier and the marching column.
