Since the middle 1960s, European culture and politics have undergone profound changes, inspired by radical students, innovative youth, militant workers and their suppression by, and frequent incorporation into, the dominant political and cultural institutions. These changes were not the effects of a class war in the classical sense. Rather, it became clear that one had to talk about class fractions, class alliances and intraclass divisions. Gramsci's conception of hegemony re-entered the currency of political language.
