Egypt is the most productive country in the world; and in its most flourishing age is said to have contained twenty thousand cities. It deserved to be called, even more than modern Belgium, "one great town." Its location brought it into contact with all the great primi- tive race-stocks alike of Africa, of Asia, and of Europe; and to all of them were transmitted some of its literary or artistic or legal ideas.
