Two Nations, Many Cultures ; ethnic groups in Canada
The debate on ethnicity in Canada has become intwined with the concept of nation. The term nation is being used quite ambiguously by Canadians; to a large extent this lack of clarity can be traced to the two standard dictionary definitions of the word. On the one hand, a nation is defined as an ag- gregate of persons of the same ethnic family, speaking the same language or cognate languages; on the other hand, a nation is defined as a body of peo- ple in a particular territory who are sufficiently conscious of their unity to seek or to possess a government peculiarly their own.
