There is great variation in the range of human situations subsumed under the generic title of colonialism, and while theoreticians debate the origin, motivation and dimensions of this most powerful of historical environments, C and attempt to define lines of classification which satisfy all the evidence provided by colonial societies, whether that evidence be economic, ethnic or socio-cultural, the problem still remains of satisfactorily explaining the nature of change and historical development within the colonial environment, and of delineating the dynamics of evolution in the colonial society.
