Regional Dynamics of The Indonesian Revolution: unity from diversity
The views and perspective of Indonesia's national leaders have domi- nated studies of the country's independence struggle. Most histories of the revolution have looked outward from the center of the revolution- ary Republic to the country's own regions as well as to the interna- tional world. In a nation whose extensive territories incorporate diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural groups, and where the record of events and attitudes in outlying areas has not been easily accessible, the dominance of such a perspective is perhaps inevitable. However, the men leading the Republic from its capital on Java were basing their claims to leadership of the country and its revolution on an assump- tion of popular support in the daerah (regions), and without the strength provided by that military, political, and moral backing, they would have been unable to compel the Dutch to acknowledge the independence of the new nation state.
