Imperata Management for Smallholders : an extensionist's guide to rational imperata management for smallholder
Imperata cylindrica (L.) Raeuschel is a troublesome and noxious perennial rhizomatous grass weed found on all continents in the tropics and parts of the sub-tropics. It is particularly a problem in high rainfall areas of South-East Asia and West Africa. It occurs in perennial crops such as rubber, tea, oil palm, coconuts and teak plantations as well as annual food and industrial crops such as maize, soybeans, cotton and many others. No accurate assessment of the Imperata problem has been made. Estimates of Imperata areas range from 7.5 to as high as 65 million hectares in Indonesia alone. Land cleared of forest but not yet under intensive management is especially at risk.
