Early Reception of Western Legal Thought in Japan 1841-1868
The main aim of the Japanese Government that came into power after fall the Tokugawa Shogunate and the restoration of imperial rule in 1868, the Meiji restoration, was to make Japan into a wealthy and strong country, equal to the Western powers that since 1854 had so clearly demonstrated their superiority by forcing upon Japan a series of disadvantageous treaties
