Circle of Rights : economics, social and cultural rights activism a training resource
Where did this project begin? We-the editors of Circle of Rights-could trace it back to the workshop we held in Chiangmai, Thailand in 1996. However, we could also trace it back to nearly twenty years of personal experience working in the field of human rights and, more importantly, to the changes that have taken place in human rights activism during that time.
In many respects, our entry into human rights was preceded by our social justice concems. We saw our commitment to social issues as part of the struggle for justice, and we did not use the term "human rights" or make a fine distinction between civil and political rights and economic, social and cultural (ESC) rights.
However, when we began to work with human rights organizations, our work naturally inclined towards civil and political rights. Personal concerns and experiences regarding larger social justice issues became subsumed within the overall framework and direction of international human rights activism, which was predominantly concerned with civil and political rights issues. We each, working in our separate arenas, felt the absence of conceptual tools to deal with the social and economic issues that were our principal concerns, it was much easier to simply tackle civil and political rights issues.
