Globalization, Trade, and the Peoples of Asia and the Pacific : case studies from Australia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, and the Phillipines
Since the creation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) as a result of the Uruguay Round trade agreements in 1994, the pace of economic globalization and liberalization in the trade of goods, services, and intellectual property, has been accelerating.
This compilation of case studies looks at the impact of such globalization and liberalization from the perspective of national Friends of the Earth groups in Australia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines. These groups work closely with local communities, policy- makers, and civil society on a local and national level, giving them the capability to assess the on-the-ground impacts of economic liberalization and globalization.
This synthesis paper will not provide executive summaries of the entire contents of each case study. Rather, this synthesis will attempt to draw out the key findings and issues raised by each paper. It will attempt to present, in broad strokes that which will be detailed in each case study, the overall impact of economic globalization and liberalization in the five countries under study.
